DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER
Dwight D. Eisenhower sends a typed letter referring to Nixon winning New Jersey but losing Pennsylvania in the 1968 election.
Typed Letter Signed: "Ike", 1p, 7x10¼. Walter Reed Hospital, 1968 November 13. To toy manufacturer David Marx and his wife, Shrewsbury, New Jersey. In full: "Thank you for remembering me with the lovely arrangement of my favorite flowers---yellow roses. They certainly added a touch of cheer to my room. The election news was heartening. You did better in New Jersey than we did in Pennsylvania and I am sure it took a lot of hard work." Eight days earlier, on November 5, 1968, Richard Nixon defeated Hubert Humphrey for President, 301-191 electoral votes. George Wallace carried five states, 46 electoral votes. Nixon carried 32 states, including New Jersey. Humphrey carried 13 states, including Pennsylvania. On March 28, 1969, four months after writing this letter, 78-year-old Dwight D. Eisenhower died of heart failure at Walter Reed Hospital. Lightly creased. Fine condition. With envelope bearing his rare metered, undated Washington, D.C. five-star free frank used by him while a patient at Walter Reed. Paper clip rust stain at upper blank margin. Lightly soiled on verso, else fine. Two items.
