Dwight D. Eisenhower sends a typed letter asking his former Secretary of Commerce to review the first volume of his memoirs to make sure the information is accurate.
Typed Letter Signed: "Ike E", 1p, 7x10¼. On his monogrammed Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, stationery but penned from Augusta, Georgia, 1962 November 30. To his former Secretary of Commerce, Lewis L. Strauss. In full: "The first volume of my memoirs is nearing completion. It includes my days at NATO in Paris and the first three years of my Presidency, ending on February 29, 1956, the day I announced I would stand for re-election. Since memory is a fallible thing, I am writing to ask if you would review certain of the chapters (listed on enclosure) for me before the manuscript goes to press. By no means would I ask for extensive comments, editing, or re-write; the professionals at Doubleday can help me on most of that. What I would ask that you do is simply to review the chapters for (1) any important items omitted or handled so incompletely as to fail to tell the story, and (2) any errors in fact or opinion. It would involve simply making notes on the manuscript itself (unless a comment happens to be so lengthy as to require a separate sheet). I was delighted that we had an opportunity to visit a short time back. Mamie and I are now resting in Georgia. After three weeks here we will be back in Gettysburg until the first of the year when we depart for California and our annual sojourn there." Eisenhower's book, The White House Years-Volume I, Mandate for Change, 1953-1956, was published in 1963. Two years later, he published The White House Years-Volume II, Waging Peace, 1956-1961. Eisenhower had appointed Strauss as his Secretary of Commerce on November 13, 1958. On June 27, 1959 however, by a vote of 49-46, the U.S. Senate refused to confirm him. Strauss had previously served as Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission (1953-1958). In June 1954 he had denied security clearance to J. Robert Oppenheimer, the head of the Los Alamos laboratory for atomic research during WWII. As a result, Strauss was the first Cabinet nominee to be rejected by the Senate since 1925. Strauss and "Ike", who spent portions of each winter in Indio, California, remained good friends. Staple holes at upper left blank corner, where an "F" has been written in ink (unknown hand).
