Dwight D. Eisenhower sends a medallion of thanks for the support
during his campaign.
Typed Letter Signed: "D.E." as President, 1p,
7x8¾. The White House,
Washington, 1956 December 17. To Robert Cutler, The White House
Office. In full: "The attached medallion [not present] is
merely a token of the appreciation Mrs. Eisenhower and I have for all the hard
work and long hours you devoted to the political campaign of 1956. It
also brings to you our best wishes for a happy holiday season, and warm
regard." In the November 6, 1956, election, the first time a Republican
President and his Vice President were re-elected, the Eisenhower-Nixon
ticket defeated Democrats Stevenson and Kefauver in a landside, 457-73
electoral votes. Brigadier General ROBERT CUTLER
(1895-1974) was the nation's first Special Assistant for National Security
Affairs for President Eisenhower from 1953-1955 and 1957-1958. Glue stains
on verso with heavy show through in upper third of letter behind "The White
House/Washington" and "December 17, 1956". Lightly
soiled.
