Typed Letter Signed: "D.E." as President, 1p, 7x10¼. The White House, 1958 December 18. On his personal gilt-monogrammed White House stationery, Eisenhower writes to toy company executive David Marx, New York. In full: "I am delighted to learn that you have joined the grandfather ranks, and I hope that Margaret Amanda brings you and Charlene just as much joy as Mamie and I find in each one of our grandchildren. I'll admit the new status is a little hard to get used to, but let me assure you, as an experienced hand, that it has many compensations. At the same time I am told that a most useful and exceedingly generous gift has been stowed away in the White House for our use and for the enjoyment of our guests. You are, as always, just about the most thoughtful person in the world, and I am perennially in your debt. Mamie has had great fun with the toys she has been distributing; if the thanks of all the recipients could be melted down, you would really have what we know you possess, a heart of pure gold. For all the Marx family, Mamie and I wish a fine holiday season; we shall hope to see you soon after the first of the New Year." Dwight and Mamie Eisenhower had four grandchildren at the time this letter was written: 10-year-old David, 9-year-old Barbara, 6-year-old Susan, and 2-year-old Mary Jean. Lightly soiled at bottom blank margin, slightly nicked at right horizontal folds. Fine condition.
