FERDINAND MARCOS
He signs a typed letter on Presidential stationery (1979)
Typed Letter signed: "F.E. Marcos" as President, 1 page, 8x10½.
Malacanang (Manila, Philippines), 1979 November 28. On official
letterhead to Clay Harrison, Tampa, Florida. In full: "This is to
acknowledge receipt of your letter dated September 29, 1979. With pleasure, I am
sending you back the enclosed picture with my autograph. [Item not
included.] Please accept my warmest personal regards. Sincerely yours".
Ferdinand Marcos (1917-1989) fought with US forces on Bataan,
survived the subsequent "Death March", escaped and waged guerrilla warfare
against the Japanese. After World War II, he entered politics, serving as a
federal legislator and Senate President before being elected President of the
Philippines in 1965. Beginning as a reformer, Marcos resorted to
heavy-handed corruption (symbolized by the extravagance of First Lady Imelda
Marcos) and repression to retain power. He declared marshal law and allegedly
had key opponent Benigno Aquino assassinated. He was driven from power in
1986 by demonstrations after "officially" defeating Corazon Aquino, widow of
the assassinated foe, in a presidential election. He died in exile in Hawaii.
