. Important Typed DS: "Fidel Castro Ruz" as Prime Minister and "M Urrutia" as President, 1p, 10¾x14. El Palacio de la Presidencia, Havana, 1959 February 17. Countersigned by the Minister of the Treasury. In Spanish, not fully translated. Plus a cover page, on "Republic de Cuba/Presidencia" stationery, titled: "LAW No. 85/1959/that suspends the allocations for expenses of representation/and reimbursement for the Prime Minister and the Ministers of the/Government". Prime Minister Castro and President Urrutia sign this law which suspends expenses and reimbursements to government officials from March, 1959, "inasmuch as the Revolution was fought to eradicate unemployment and elevate the standard of one's life,...until those goals have been reached...." On January 3, 1959, MANUEL URRUTIA took the oath of office as Provisional President of Cuba in Santiago de Cuba, the provisional capital of Cuba. The United States recognized the new Cuban government on January 7, 1959. On February 16, 1959, FIDEL CASTRO was sworn in as Prime Minister of Cuba, succeeding José Miró Cardona who had resigned. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME CASTRO ASSUMED ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES WITHIN THE NEW CUBAN GOVERNMENT. THE NEXT DAY HE SIGNED THIS DOCUMENT. President Urrutia served until July 17, 1959, when he was forced to resign by his cabinet who accused him of obstructing reforms. Lightly creased. Blue paper seal affixed with ribbon at lower right. Three loose-leaf file holes and seven pinhead-size holes in blank left margin. ¼x1-inch piece missing at upper blank area (all intact). Browned at edges. Stray ink mark at lower blank area.
