FIDEL CASTRO
He signs a colorful 11x17 document recognizing a student for participating in the University Social Work Brigade (2001).
Document signed: "Fidel Castro", 1 page, 11x17. Text in Spanish. Havana, Cuba, 2001 July 26. Recognition of Yuselis Montalvo Bosque (name handprinted) for participation in the University Social Work Brigade, working in the barrios of the capital. Document contains seven color photographs, three of which show Castro himself making speeches and answering questions from students. Cubans observe July 26 as the anniversary of the revolution, dated from the attack on the Moncada Barracks (1953). While a student, Castro twice abandoned his studies in favor of revolutionary pursuits: in 1947, he went to the Dominican Republic to participate in an attempt to overthrow Generalissimo Rafael Trujillo; in 1948, he participated in urban riots in Bogata, Columbia. Although he started a law practice in 1950, within three years he was again involved in rebel activities; this time in his own country against Fulgencio Batista. On January 1, 1959, Batista fled the country, and Castro took over as Premier, a title he would hold until 1976, when he became President of the Council of State and the Council of Ministers. Although Castro's Marxist-Leninist principles and alignment with the former Soviet Union isolated Cuba in the Western Hemisphere and antagonized the United States, his regime outlasted its former Soviet patron. Light creases, none touching signature. 1¼-inch diameter stamp of an airplane above signature. Fine condition.
