FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT and FREDERIC A. DELANO
Roosevelt's endorsement on a typed request from the National Resources Planning Board to release two planning reports to the public. Accompanied by the original reports.
Autograph endorsement signed: "OK/FDR", written at the bottom of a typed letter signed "Frederic A. Delano" as NRPB Chairman, 1 page, 8x10½. Executive Office of the President, National Resources Planning Board, Washington, D.C., 1940 July 15. Addressed to the President, the TLS reads in full: "The Board takes pleasure in sending you herewith proof sheets of the two reports - 'Regional Planning - Part IX- Northern Great Plains' and 'Public Land Acquisition, Part I, Rural Lands'. Because of a public interest in the subjects of both reports, we would like to make them available through public release, on or after July 22, when printed copies are ready. If this meets with your approval, we shall work out with your secretaries the releasing procedure. Sincerely yours." Accompanied by the reports mentioned in the letter (35 pages) and by an unsigned copy of an earlier letter to the President regarding the reports. FREDERIC ADRIAN DELANO (1863-1953) was Franklin Roosevelt's uncle. After serving as President of several railroads, he served FDR in the regional planning boards of New York State and later the US. As Chairman of the National Capital Park and Planning Commission, he helped oversee construction of the Pentagon. Delano was the first Vice Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board. FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT (1882-1945) was Governor of New York (1929-1933) and the 32nd President of the United States. Elected to unprecedented third and fourth terms, Roosevelt devoted most of his first two terms to recovery from the Great Depression and to creating new federal programs under the rubric of the New Deal. His last years in office were dominated by his role as Commander in Chief during World War II. One of Roosevelt's initiatives was the National Resources Planning Board, established in 1934 to coordinate regional development and conservation of water, soil, timber and minerals. The best known example of Roosevelt's enthusiasm for regional resource management was the Tennessee Valley Authority, created in 1933. Paper clip imprint at top left corner. Lightly creased and toned. Minor notch at lower left edge. Pencil marks (unknown hand). Otherwise, fine condition.
