FRANKLIN ROOSEVELT
He signs a 1928 typed memo, forwarding a check for the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation
Typed Memo signed: "F. D. Roosevelt" , 1 page, 8½x11. No place, 1928 July 12. Addressed to "Mr. Taylor." Ink docketing stamp of Roosevelt & O'Connor (FDR's New York law firm) in upper right corner. In full: "Please credit the following check to the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation: Miss Sara E. Burnham, 2906 Jefferson Avenue [handwritten addition, "East", by unknown hand], Detroit Mich. $25.00 JFA". Stricken in 1921 with a paralyzing illness diagnosed as polio, Roosevelt had little success in regaining use of his lower body until, on a friend's recomendation, he visited the natural springs at Warm Springs, Georgia, in 1924. These springs, flowing at 88º Fahrenheit, had long been recognized for their curative properties. Roosevelt visited Warm Springs 41 times, and in 1927 he personally funded the creation of the Georgia Warm Springs Institute on the site, dedicated to the rehabilitation of polio victims. Roosevelt died at Warm Springs on April 12, 1945. Ten years later to the day, a cure for polio was discovered. The Institute broadened its mission to treat many kinds of disabled persons, and flourishes today as the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation, now administered by the State of Georgia.Four months after he signed this letter, Roosevelt was elected to the first of his two terms as Governor of New York. His next office would be President of the United States, a post he filled longer than anyone else (1933-1945). File holes at left margin. Received stamp at upper right corner. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
