Comprises: (1) Typed Letter Signed: "Franklin D. Roosevelt" as President, 1p, 7x8¼. The White House, Washington, 1935 January 17. To Henry L. Roosevelt, Assistant Secretary of the Navy. In full: "That is a grand thought of our friend, Mr. Andre Chevallier, and I hope you will tell him how much I appreciate it. I wish that all of us could take that ride once more. At least it would do our figures a lot of good." FDR's distant cousin Henry L. Roosevelt served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy from 1933 until his death on February 22, 1936. Lightly creased and soiled. Paper clip impressions at upper blank margin. (2) Unsigned carbon Typed Letter from H.L. Roosevelt to the President, 1935 January 16. In part: "My friend, Mr. Andre Chevallier, of Port-au-Prince, who, you may remember, was the secretary at Headquarters of the Gendarmerie when you visited us in Haiti in 1917, has sent me some of the best product of that country, and has asked me to give it to you...." Fine condition. (3) Unsigned carbon Typed Letter from H.L. Roosevelt to Andre Chevallier, Port-au-Prince, Haiti, 1935 January 2. In part: "I hope you will pardon my delay in answering your letter and in thanking you for the rum, half of which I am sending to the President today...." Letter "C" written in upper right corner and check mark above greeting (unknown hand). Fine condition. (4) Autograph Letter Signed: "André F. Chevallier" in French, 2p, 5x4 card. Parc Chevallier, Port-au-Prince, Haiti, 1934 November 22. Not fully translated. In part: "My dear Colonel, By Minister Blanchet, who leaves today, I send you several bottles of an excellent rum, for you and President Franklin Roosevelt...." Creased. Rust stains from paper clip impressions at upper blank touching letterhead and at blank left, these stains touch text on verso. Note (unknown hand) at blank left. Four items.
