FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT
Franklin D. Roosevelt sends a typed letter of recommendation.
TLS: "Franklin D. Roosevelt" as Assistant Secretary of the
Navy, 1p, 6½x7. Washington, 1914 February 21. To an unnamed Governor; the
lower portion of the page has been cut away removing the Governor's name.
In full: "It seems perfectly absurd that any additional recommendation
of mine will be needed to convince you of the merits of a man you have known as
long as and as well as our friend William A. Mallery, Jr., of Hillsdale.
Mr. Mallery, however, seems to think that a line from me, calling your attention
to his fitness for the position of Fiscal Supervisor of State Charities,
may help and I am, of course, only too glad to say anything I can for him. You
know all there is to know about him and I am sure that you feel he is more than
capable of filling the position. It is equally obvious that Mr. Mallery comes
from practically the same district as the late Mr. Tilden and that the political
balance of things, as it were, could be maintained by his appointment. All this
and many other reasons why Mr. Mallery is a candidate to be most carefully
considered for this place are. of course, well known to you, and I would not
think of bothering you with a letter expressing what you already know must be my
personal hope that he will be appointed were it not that I had been asked to do
so. Sincerely yours," There are 12 towns named Hillsdale in the United
States including New York which has a Fiscal Supervisor of State Charities
appointed by the Governor. Hillsdale, NY is less than 50 miles from FDR's Hyde
Park, NY home. After impeached New York Governor William Sulzer was removed
from office, Lieutenant Governor Martin H. Glynn became Governor of New York on
October 27, 1913. Glynn was from Kinderhook, 25 miles from Hillsdale. So it
is safe to say that FDR is writing to New York Governor Martin H. Glynn.
Roosevelt served as Wilson's Assistant Secretary of the Navy from 1913-1920.
Receipt stamp at right margin "Feb 25 1914". 10 words underlined in pencil.
Erased pencil note at upper right corner and "X" in red pencil touching date
