FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT
The President signs a highly complimentary typed letter accepting the resignation of the Solicitor General J. Crawford Biggs.
Typed Letter Signed: "Franklin D. Roosevelt" as President, 1 page, 7x8¾. The White House, Washington, 1935 March 14. To J. Crawford Biggs, Solicitor General, Department of Justice, Washington, D.C. In full: "I accept your resignation with very real regret. For nearly two years you have discharged your important duties with distinction and success. A survey of your record and that of your office, taking into account the business transacted, the multiplicity of matters entrusted to your care, and the results achieved, will challenge comparison with any like period of time in the history of your department. That you feel constrained to return to private practice of your profession, I can well understand. You carry with you my best wishes and my sincere thanks for the public service you have rendered." JAMES CRAWFORD BIGGS (1872-1960) was an attorney in North Carolina from 1894 to 1933 when President Roosevelt appointed him as Solicitor General. After he resigned in 1935, Biggs returned to the practice of law until he retired in 1950 at the age of 78. The Solicitor General conducts Supreme Court litigation on behalf of the United States, and supervises such litigation in the federal appellate courts. Creased at horizontal fold, which does not touch signature. Paperclip impression at upper left corner touches the letters of letterhead. Overall, fine condition.
