FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT
He signs a typed letter as President, thanking close advisor Harry Hopkins for birthday gifts, including a copy of Robinson Crusoe in French.
Typed Letter Signed: "FDR" as President, 1 page, 7x9. The White House, Washington, 1943 April 10. To Harry L. Hopkins, The White House. In full: "I have not had a chance before this to thank you for those very interesting items which you and the others gave me for my birthday. I am thrilled to have the Log of the 'Philadelphia' and I have always wanted the French edition of Robinson Crusoe. They are a real addition to my collection and I am grateful for your thought of me. My best to you." President Roosevelt was fluent in French. In fact, five months earlier, on November 7, 1942, he addressed the French people in their own language from Washington at the same time that the American Army was taking part in the invasion of French territorial possessions in Africa. Among FDR's hobbies were collecting books, ship models, stamps, manuscripts and autographs. HARRY L. HOPKINS (1890-1946) was head of the Works Projects Administration (1935-1938), Secretary of Commerce (1938-1940) and the head of the Lend-Lease Administration (1941). From 1942-1945, he was Special Assistant to the President. Roosevelt had celebrated his 61st birthday on January 30, 1943. Light ¼-inch finger smudge at upper right corner. Fine condition.
