FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT
Newly appointed Assistant Secretary of the Navy in the Wilson administration, he signs a typed letter to a New York legislator: "Nothing has been done about appointments ..., but I will keep you posted."
Typed Letter Signed: "Franklin D. Roosevelt" as Wilson's Assistant Secretary of the Navy, 1 page, 7x9¼. Washington, 1915 April 16. To Hon. Clayton L. Wheeler, Chairman, Hancock, Delaware County, N.Y. In full: "I am just back from the Pacific Coast and have been delighted to find the pail of maple sugar. The whole family is enjoying it and say it is the most delightful thing they get to eat. I have not yet had a chance to see the Attorney General [Thomas W. Gregory] but expect to do so in a few days. Nothing has been done about appointments and, frankly, I do not know when any action will be taken, but I will keep you posted." Clayton L. Wheeler was New York State Senator from 1913-1914. FDR had served in the N.Y. State Senate from 1911-1913 when he became Assistant Secretary of the Navy (1913-1920). At the time of this letter, FDR's "whole family" consisted of wife Eleanor, eight-year-old Anna, seven-year-old James, four-year-old Elliott, eight-month-old Franklin, Jr. and his widowed mother, Sara. Lightly stained at blank left edge. Overall, fine condition.
