Typed Letter Signed: "Franklin D. Roosevelt" as 32nd U.S. President, 1p, 7x9. The White House, Washington, 1933 May 24. To Sylvestre Dorian, Esq., Scarsdale, New York. In full: "My Mother has sent me the framed verse and I want to tell you how much I appreciate your thought. My best wishes for a pleasant voyage." Lightly creased. Soiled at blank margins. Overall, fine condition. With original postmarked White House envelope indicating that the letter had been forwarded from Scarsdale to Brussels, Belgium to Gastonia, North Carolina. Stamp removed. Creased and soiled. SYLVESTRE DORIAN (1899-1934) was the author of Sarah Bernhardt As I Knew Her (1924). Sara Delano married James Roosevelt in 1880 and had one child, Franklin. James died in 1900. In 1907, as a wedding present for her son and his bride Eleanor, Sara had a house built next to her own on East 65th Street in Manhattan. FDR and Eleanor continued to live there off and on until they moved into the White House in 1933. FDR always deferred to his mother who lived in the White House as well as in Hyde Park until her death in 1941. Two items.
