During World War I, FDR sends thanks for a telescope which the Navy is unable to use in the war effort but is returning them.
Typed Letter Signed: "F.D. Roosevelt" as Wilson's Assistant Secretary of the Navy, 1p, 7¾x10½. Navy Department, Washington, 1918 June 8. To Mr. Foster G. Valentine, Richmond, Virginia. In full: "Your prompt and patriotic response to the NAVY'S call for glasses is greatly appreciated. It is with regret that at the present time your Telescope cannot be used and is therefore being returned to you by registered mail. On behalf of the NAVY, O wish to thank you most heartily. Very respectfully," Roosevelt served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy from 1913 until he became the Democratic candidate for Vice President in 1920.On April 2, 1918, President Wilson asked for a Declaration of War and subsequently directed the mobilization of American forces and resources. The American people responded by donating items to the military, including the spy-glasses mentioned in this letter. Fold creases through "F" and "R" of F.D. Roosevelt. Lightly toned.
