Typed Letter Signed: "Franklin D. Roosevelt" as Acting Secretary of the Navy, 1p, 8x10½. Navy Department, Washington, 1915 June 21. To Maj. John S. Hair, General Manager, Citizens Monument Association, Long Beach, California. In full: "I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of June 12th, requesting that the vessel or vessels to be sent to Long Beach, Calif., on July 3, 1915, be authorized to fire in addition to the salute already provided fro, a salute of 21 guns in honor of the President of the United States. The U. S. S. CHATTANOOGA has been detailed for the duty at Long Beach, Calif., and they have been instructed to fire the additional salute requested. In behalf of the President, I beg to express my keen appreciation of your patriotic moral support. Very sincerely yours," The Twenty-One Gun Salute has its tradition in the Navy. The U.S. Navy regulations of 1818 were the first to formally present the use of the salute. The Battle of Gettysburg was fought on July 1, 2 and 3, 1863. On November 13, 1863, President Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address there. Lightly creased. Lightly shaded at upper right edge. Overall, fine condition.
