SOUTH CAROLINA CONGRESSMAN PRESENTS FDR WITH A GIFT OF "THREE
COTTON SUITS"
FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT. Typed Letter Sigend: "Franklin
D. Roosevelt" as President, 1p, 7x8¾. The White House, Washington,
1939 June 29. To Congressman H.P. Fulmer. Marked "Personal" in
type. In full: "I am delighted to have those three cotton suits
which were sent through you and want to take this occasion to thank you very
much for your thoughtfulness in seeing that I received them. Will you also
please extend my thanks to the donors? My best wishes to you." Democrat
HAMPTON PITTS FULMER (1875-1944) represented South Carolina in the House
of Representatives from 1921 until his death on October 19, 1944. His widow,
Willa Lybrand Fulmer, was elected to complete his term, serving from November 7,
1944 to January 3, 1945. South Carolina ranks high among the states in
textile manufacturing. The industry employs nearly half the state's industrial
workers, and the value of its products is more than one fourth the value of all
manufactures. Cotton fabrics make up much of the output, so a gift of three
cotton suits for the President from South Carolinians was appropriate. Fold
crease not near signature. Fine condition.
