FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT
As Democratic presidential candidate, he does not take North Carolina for granted.
Typed Letter Sigend: "Franklin D. Roosevelt" as Governor of New York, 1p, 8½x11. Executive Mansion, Albany, New York, 1932 August 20. To Mr. E.C. Macon, Asheville, N.C. In full: "I appreciate very much the personal and confidential information which you have given me in your letter regarding the situation in North Carolina. I agree with you that the sentiment in your state seems to be favorable to us at the present time, but it is also necessary that we all keep our eyes and ears open and make sure that our opponents do not secure any advantage on account of our over-confidence." At the Democratic National Convention held at Chicago Stadium on June 27-July 2, 1932, Roosevelt was nominated for President on the fourth ballot. President Hoover had been renominated at the Republican National Convention on June 14-16, 1932, also at Chicago Stadium. At the last presidential election in 1928, North Carolina had voted Republican for the first time since Grant had carried the state in 1872, as Roosevelt was well aware. In the November 8, 1932, election, Roosevelt defeated Hoover by 22.8 million to 15.8 million popular votes, 472-59 electoral votes and 42-six states. Roosevelt won North Carolina as well as the entire South. Hoover won three New England states, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Nevada. Creased at right margin. Folds do not touch signature. Overall, fine condition.
