FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT
Franklin D. Roosevelt sends a typed letter of thanks for the advice.
Typed Letter Signed: "F.D.R." as President, 1p, 7x8¾. The White House, Washington, 1940 October 29. To J. David Stern, The Philadelphia Record, Philadelphia, Pa. In full: "I appreciate tremendously your advice and deep feeling in regard to my going to Chicago. I only wish that the time element and the international situation would permit me to conscientiously do it. I must, however, hold to my resolution as I believe it is in the best interest of the Government." The words "to conscientiously do" has been underlined in pencil, probably by STERN, publisher of the pro-New Deal "Philadelphia Record". From 1933-1939, he also published the "New York Post". FDR had been nominated for a third term at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, July 15-18, 1940. He no doubt had scheduled a campaign speech in Chicago and then decided not to go. This letter was written just one week before the election. The international situation was tense. The Battle of Britain had begun on September 7th. It ended October 31st after 57 consecutive nights of Nazi raids on London. Italy had invaded Greece on October 28, 1940, just one day before this letter. FDR put the "best interest of the government" ahead of politics. Lightly creased. Soiled.
