FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT
As Governor-Elect, he regrets that he cannot attend a tribute to the creators of the
Bronx River Parkway.
Typed Letter Signed: "Franklin D. Roosevelt" as Governor-Elect, 1p, 7¼x10½. Warm
Springs, Ga., 1928 December 4. To Walter Russell, Esq., President, The Society of
Arts and Sciences, New York City. In full: "I am delighted to learn that the Society will
give medals of award to those responsible for the Bronx River Parkway. It is a well
deserved tribute. I wish much that I might come to the dinner on January 24th, but I
doubt if I shall be able to leave Albany at all during January. I cannot tell definitely until I
get there." RUSSELL was President of the Society of Arts and Sciences from 1927-1935.
The Society of Arts and Sciences was the cultural extension of the Twilight Club, which
awarded medals in recognition of genius in the arts and sciences. In the 1920s, with the
urging of the Twilight Club, the Bronx River Parkway was built, beautifying New York
and becoming a model for the rest of the country. Slightly creased. Folds. Horizontal fold
touches signature. Light paper clip impression at upper edge, light red pencil check mark at
lower blank margin. Encapsulated. Overall, fine condition.
