FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT
Franklin D. Roosevelt sends a typed letter of regret that he will not be able to keep his appointment.
Typed Letter Signed: "Franklin D. Roosevelt" as Governor of New York, 1p, 8x10½. Executive Chamber, Albany, 1931 December 21. To William H. McMasters, Cambridge, Mass. In full: "Much to my regret I had to write the Mayor that it was impossible for me to go to Boston on February 22nd. The first reason is that I really cannot leave the State during the Legislative Session, and the second is that on that particular date we have the big Washington Celebration here in the Capitol. I am sorry indeed that I cannot come." February 22, 1932 was the 200th anniversary of the birth of George Washington, and Governor Roosevelt presided over a Washington Celebration held in Albany, the state capital. Four months later, FDR received the Democratic nomination for President. As Governor, Roosevelt began reform programs, asking the state legislature to grant tax relief to the state's farm communities and instituted the nation's first direct unemployment aid. Faint paperclip impression at upper left blank corner. Fine condition.
