He signs "FDR" to a cryptic, typed note to his law partner, Basil O'Connor (1925)
Typed Note signed : "FDR", 1 page, 3x5¼. No place, no date. To "Dear Basil" [O'Connor]. O'Connor's docketing stamp in center, over typed text, is dated 1925 January 8. In full: "Do you recall where you got this bird's name? If you do I would like to tell him to set his mind at rest." FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT (1882-1945) and BASIL O'CONNOR (1892-1972) became law partners in 1924, sharing the firm throughout Roosevelt's two terms as Governor of New York (1929-1933), and dissolving it upon Roosevelt's election as 32nd President of the United States in 1932. O'Connor also helped organize Roosevelt's public fight against polio, succeeding FDR as President of the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation and later an originator of the March of Dimes campaign. (Roosevelt had been paralyzed below the waist in 1921 from what he then believed was polio, although recent research suggests that he may actually have suffered from Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS). O'Connor led the American Red Cross as Chairman (from 1944) and President 1947-1949. More research might reveal whether FDR's signed note here was a humorous reference to a pet bird, or a mildly derogatory reference to someone involved in a legal matter. File hole to left of signature. Fine condition.
