FRANKLIN PIERCE. Country lawyer has misplaced his legal papers. ALS: "Fr Pierce", 1p, 8x10. Concord, 1851 February 18. Pierce writes on blue paper to Perley Dodge Esq., Amherst, N.H. In full: "Since my return I do not find my docket and having sent to Manchester learn that it was not left in my room at Shepherds-and think I must have left it in the Court Room or at your room. Please to write me and if you find the docket send it over to Manchester to be forwarded by Chaney & Co.'s express. I hope you will get this in season to send tomorrow as I cannot make my charges & credits without the docket. In haste." Pierce had resigned from the U.S. Senate in 1842, returning to his family in Concord, N.H. In the course of the next ten years he became a noted local lawyer, managing local Democratic campaigns. As a result of divided support for James Buchanan, Stephen A. Douglas, William L. Marcy and Lewis Cass in the 1852 Democratic presidential nomination, Pierce, who received no votes on the first ballot, was able to obtain the nomination on the 49th ballot. Lightly smudged by Pierce at the center where he had begun to write a word but then attempted to erase the letter. Folds, 1 touching the ascender of the "P". Overall, fine appearance.
