FRANKLIN PIERCE
The former President declines an invitation from a Massachusetts
group.
Autograph Letter Signed: "Franklin Pierce", 2p, 4¼x7, front
and verso. Rockingham House, Portsmouth, N.H., 1857 September 25. Six
and a half months after leaving the White House, the former 14th U.S. President
writes to five members of a committee: George Bliss, H. Alterman, Jr., John S.
King, Jas S. Whitney and C.C. Chafford in Springfield, Mass. In full:
"Your note of the 25th inst reached me this morning. I thank you for your
kind invitation and much regret that it will not be in my power to accept
it." PIERCE was the only U.S. President elected to office and denied
renomination by his party for a second term. On the first ballot at the June
2-6, 1856 Democratic Convention in Cincinnati, Buchanan led Pierce 135½ to 122½. Pierce's support gradually diminished, and Buchanan was
unanimously nominated on the 17th ballot, receiving all 296 votes cast.
GEORGE BLISS (1793-1873) was a former Massachusetts State Senator and
Speaker who had been President of the Worcester and Albany railroad. Lightly
creased. Folds, 1 touches the "l" in Franklin and 1 touches the second "e" in
Pierce, else fine.
