Sale Price $2,380.00
FRANKLIN PIERCE. ALS: "Fr. Pierce", 1p, 7x8¾. Washington, Tuesday Morg. (no
date). To Gov. Marcy. In full: "Dr Whitman will with the dispatches hand you a letter from
Mr Clay addressed to me. Besides MDr W's private business he would like to converse with you
upon a subject of public interest." WILLIAM L. MARCY had served as Governor of New York
from 1833-1839 and was referred to as "Governor Marcy" thereafter, even while serving as
Polk's Secretary of War (1845-1849) and PIERCE's Secretary of State (1853-1857). When
writing letters which were hand-delivered from the White House, Pierce usually did not
date them; instead he just indicated the day and time of day. This letter, penned by Pierce
on Tuesday morning to Governor Marcy, was therefore most probably written as
President to his Secretary of State. On uniformly tanned paper. 1-inch ink smudge touches
2 words. Browned at left and top edges, mounting remnant at right edge on verso lightly
shows through.Encapsulated. Overall, fine condition.
