After deKlerk became President of South Africa in 1989, he was committed to initiating talks for a new postapartheid constitution with representatives of the country's ethnic communities. He quickly moved to release all important political prisoners, including Nelson Mandela, and to lift the ban on the African National Congress (ANC) and the Pan-African Congress. DeKlerk and Mandela, who succeeded him as President in 1994, jointly received the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize for their collaboration in efforts to establish nonracial democracy in South Africa.
