Acknowledgment of the appointment of Bernard Gotlieb as U.S. Consul in Santiago de Cuba. GOTLIEB had previously served as U.S. Consul in Tehran (Iran) and Wellington (New Zealand). FULGENCIO BATISTA y ZALDIVAR (1901-1973) led the coup that deposed provisional Cuban President Carlos de Céspedes y Quesada in 1933. As dictator, he controlled the government from 1933-1940, when he assumed the title of President of Cuba (1940-1944). He retired in 1944 but returned to power by an army coup in 1952.
