Havana, 1955 December 28. To Andrés Martínez Trueba, President of
Uruguay. In Spanish, not translated. The Cuban President tells the
Uruguayan President that the services of Cuban Ambassador to Uruguay Doctor
Mariano Brull y Caballero are needed elsewhere. DR. MARIANO BRULL Y
CABALLERRO (1891-1956) had served as a member of Cuba's delegation to the
League of Nations in 1936 as well as in Cuba's embassies in the United States,
Peru, Belgium, Spain, France, Switzerland, Italy and Canada. He was also one of
Cuba's greatest poets, writing in Spanish but also in French. Andrés Martínez
Trueba (1881-1959) was President (1951-1952) and President of the
National Council of Government of Uruguay (1952-1955). Fulgencio Batista
y Zaldivar (1901-1973) led the coup that deposed provisional Cuban President
Carlos de Céspedes y Quesada in 1933. As dictator, he controlled the
government from 1933-1940, when he assumed the title of President of Cuba
(1940-1944). He retired in 1944 but was returned to power by an army coup in
1952. His regime was overthrown by Fidel Castro in 1959. Lightly creased.
