Autograph Letter Signed: "George" as Reagan's Vice President, 1 page, 6½x9. Washington,
D.C., 1987 March 3. On his "George Bush/Washington" stationery. To Knox. In full:
"You are right and I will speak out on 'mainstream' and blacks. I met last week with the head of
Alabama's Black Elks Great guy - all for us. Hastily -". At upper margin beneath date, Bush
has noted: "(ret yours of 3-13)". The Black Elks, a secret fraternal organization of Black
Americans, was founded in 1897. It launched its Civil Liberties Department in 1926 to fight
for the full integration of Black citizens into American society. In the 1988 presidential
election, George Bush won only 10% of the Black vote to 90% for Democrat Michael
Dukakis. Lightly creased. Fine condition.
