GEORGE H.W. BUSH
As Vice President, Bush thanks horseracing Triple Crown Winner Eddie Arcaro, for his help on the campaign.
Autograph Letter signed: "George", 1 page (front and verso), 6¼x4¼ card bearing the Vice President of The United States seal. Washington, 1987 April 23. Written to Eddie Arcaro in Miami, Florida, in full: "Dear Eddie, Thanks for going with me. Your being there clearly made a tremendous hit. Eddie, I can't thank you enough for taking the time to campaign with me in that state that loves you so much. All Best-"Accompanied by the transmittal envelope, postmarked Washington, D.C., April 29, 1987 to Mr. Eddie Arcaro, Miami, Florida. GEORGE BUSH, born in 1924, was Ronald Reagan's Vice President (1981-1989) before serving as 41st U.S. President (1989-1993), the first incumbent Vice President to be elected President since 1836. Bush's distinguished resume included oil company executive, Texas Congressman, Chairman of the Republican Party, Director of Central Intelligence, Ambassador to China and Ambassador to the United Nations. As President he conducted a largely successful foreign policy, including the first Gulf War against Iraq, Operation Desert Storm, and the 1989 invasion of Panama to depose General Manuel Noriega. But he wasn't re-elected largely due to shortcomings in his domestic policy, including a tax raise in 1990 after a campaign promise - the famous "Read my lips: No - new - taxes" speech - not to raise them. His son, George W. Bush, became 43rd president in 2001 and served two terms. No jockey has won the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness or the Belmont Stakes more times than EDDIE ARCARO (1916-1997). He won all three races, horseracing's Triple Crown, twice: in 1941 on Whirlaway and in 1948 on Citation. He is tied for the most Kentucky Derby wins (5) and Belmont Stakes wins (6), and had won over $30 million in purses before retiring (1962). Later he served as a TV commentator. Slightly worn. Slightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
