GEORGE BUSH
59-year-old Vice President George Bush, signed a letter discussing his exercise program: "59 seems old, but it isn't."
Autograph Letter Signed: "George Bush" as Vice President, on both sides of a 6¼x4¼ blue-bordered card. (Washington), 1983 June 15. To Lew & Dennis. In full: "Thanks for the card. 59 seems old, but it isn't. I've been playing tennis & running so I've missed the gym - I'll be up soon. Best to Herb, Ace and all." His 59th birthday was June 12. Bush introduced this note card, which he continued to use when he became President, during his Vice Presidency. George Bush, born in 1924, was Ronald Reagan's Vice President (1981-1989) before serving as 41st U.S. President (1989-1993), the first incumbent Vice President to be elected President since 1836. He oversaw a largely successful foreign policy, including the first Gulf War against Iraq, Operation Desert Storm, and the 1989 invasion of Panama to depose General Manuel Noriega. But he wasn't re-elected largely due to shortcomings in his domestic policy, including a tax raise in 1990 after a campaign promise - the famous "Read my lips: No - new - taxes" speech - not to raise them. His son, George W. Bush, became 43rd president in 2001 and served two terms. Fine condition.
