GEORGE BUSH
As The Vice President, George Bush, signed a handwritten letter to Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, "my favorite N. Y. Democrat."
Autograph Letter Signed: "George" as Vice President, 2 pages, 6¼x4¼. On both sides of his blue-bordered card bearing the seal of the Vice President in blue and gold in the upper left. No place, no date but c. 1986. To New York Senator DANIEL PATRICK MOYNIHAN, a Democrat. In full: "Dear Pat- Thanks for 'Family' and the inscription - nice. I'm glad there is a re-birth of my favorite N.Y. Democrat in the eyes of the early-on critics. You were right back then, too. Now about that Family Assistance Plan malarkey- All Best." GEORGE BUSH was Reagan's Vice President from 1981-1989 and President from 1989-1993. Moynihan's book, Family and Nation, was published in 1986. In 1969, with the assistance of then-Urban Affairs Council secretary Daniel Patrick Moynihan, President Nixon created the Family Assistance Plan. FAP called for the replacement of bureaucratically administered programs such as Aid to Families with Dependent Children, Food Stamps and Medicaid, with direct cash payments to those in need. Not only single-parent families, but the working poor would qualify for aid. The plan was attacked by conservatives who felt it was too liberal and liberals who felt the guaranteed income was too low and FAP died in Congress. Moynihan, no doubt, referred to FAP in Family and Nation. DIRECTLY FROM THE SALE OF THE ESTATE OF SENATOR DANIEL PATRICK MOYNIHAN. Moynihan (1927-2003) represented New York as a Democrat for four terms (1977-2001).A prolific author, he served in the administrations of four Presidents (two Democrats and two Republicans): Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford. Estate inventory numbers stamped at edges of both sides and written in ink (unknown hand) at upper right of first page. Staple holes at upper left.
