GEORGE H.W. BUSH
He signs a calligraphically inscribed photo to former Oklahoma football coach Bud Wilkinson, who is shown shaking hands with the President.
Inscribed Photograph Signed: "Friendship!/George Bush". Color, 8x10. Calligraphic inscription: "To Bud and Donna Wilkinson/With best wishes". The Wilkinsons are shown in the picture, chatting with President Bush. George Herbert Walker Bush (b. 1924) was Ronald Reagan's Vice President (1981-1989) before serving as 41st U.S. President (1989-1993), the first incumbent Vice President to be elected President since 1836. Bush's distinguished resume included oil company executive, Texas Congressman, Chairman of the Republican Party, Director of Central Intelligence, Ambassador to China and Ambassador to the United Nations. As President he conducted a largely successful foreign policy, including the first Gulf War against Iraq, Operation Desert Storm, and the 1989 invasion of Panama to depose General Manuel Noriega. But domestic problems, including a recession, and a tax increase contradicting a campaign pledge, cost him re-election. His son, George W. Bush, became 43rd president in 2001 and served two terms. Bud Wilkinson (1916-1994) was head football coach of the University of Oklahoma (1946-1973), winning three national championships. Later he interrupted many years as a TV football commentator to coach two seasons with the NFL St Louis Cardinals. Wilkinson was active in Republican politics, including an unsuccessful bid for a US Senate seat in 1964. Fine condition.
