GEORGE BUSH
Shown as Captain of the Yale baseball team, on the mound with a dying Babe Ruth in 1948.
Photograph signed and calligraphically inscribed: "To Cathie Alford/with best wishes,/George Bush", B/w 8x10. The calligraphic inscription indicates that Bush signed here as President. Shown in Yale University baseball uniform, on the mound with Babe Ruth, receiving the manuscript of Ruth's biography (donated to the University). President George Bush was captain of the Yale University's baseball team, which went to the 1947 College World Series (losing to USC on a home run by future Red Sox star Jackie Jensen). This photo is of the future President with an ailing Babe Ruth, terminally ill with cancer, on the mound. Bush said of this event. "I was captain of the ball club, so I got to receive him there. He was dying. He was hoarse and could hardly talk. He kind of croaked when they set up the mike by the pitcher's mound. It was tragic. He was hollow. His whole great shape was gaunt and hollowed out." Ruth, Bush remembered, praised the beauty of the Yale ball field, saying it looked like a putting green. The 41st President remained a lifelong baseball fan, even stroking a single in a Major League Old-Timers game in 1981. "It was more than fun." He frequently used baseball analogies to make political points. Bush passed his life of baseball on to George W. Bush, who owned a share of the Texas Rangers before going on to the governor's mansion and the White House. Fine condition.
