PRESIDENT GEORGE H.W. BUSH - COLLECTION CIRCA 2000 WITH JAMES E ROGAN - HFSID 285294
Price: $325.00
GEORGE BUSH and JAMES ROGAN
George Bush and James Rogan signed this program from a fundraiser for Congressman
Rogan's re-election campaign in 2000. The flyer reproduces several items linking Rogan
to the former President. Rogan, a floor manager in the impeachment trial of President
Clinton, was targeted for defeat in this California district, setting a (since broken) record
as history's most expensive election for a US House seat. It is accompanied by
authenticating letter from Rogan on Congressional letterhead.
Program signed: "George Bush", "James Rogan", 6 pages, 5½x8½. Program for a campaign
reception welcoming Bush and Rogan to Houston. Signed by both on the cover in black felt
tip. The program features facsimiles of letters (typed and handwritten) from Bush in support
of Rogan, and reproduced photos of Bush with the Rogan family. Fine condition.
Accompanied by Typed Letter signed: "James Rogan" as US Representative, 1 page,6¼x8½.
Washington, D.C., 2000 September 29. On Congressional letterhead, in full: "This letter
accompanies a program from a Rogan for Congress fund raiser held in Houston, Texas on
September 26, 2000. The guest of honor at the event was the former President of the United
States, George Bush. While at the event, I personally obtained the autograph of President
Bush on this item. Sincerely". Fine condition. GEORGE BUSH (1924-2018) was Ronald
Reagan's Vice President (1981-1989) before serving as 41st U.S. President (1989-1993), the
first incumbent Vice President to be elected President since 1836. Bush's distinguished resume
included oil company executive, Texas Congressman, Chairman of the Republican Party,
Director of Central Intelligence, Ambassador to China and Ambassador to the United
Nations. As President he conducted a largely successful foreign policy, including the first
Gulf War against Iraq, Operation Desert Storm, and the 1989 invasion of Panama to
depose General Manuel Noriega. But he wasn't re-elected largely due to shortcomings in his
domestic policy, including a tax raise in 1990 after a campaign promise - the famous "Read
my lips: No - new - taxes" speech - not to raise them. His son, George W. Bush, became
43rd president in 2001 and served two terms. JAMES E. ROGAN, rose from an
impoverished childhood to become a lawyer and a member of the US House of
Representatives (1997-2001). Rogan, a Republican, was one of the House floor managers
for the Senate impeachment trial of President Clinton. Since opinion in Rogan's
California district had been very much opposed to impeachment, Rogan was - not
surprisingly, targeted for defeat in the 2000 election campaign. Despite active support
from President Bush, and his own nationwide fundraising effort (as in the Houston event
shown here), Rogan did lose his seat to Democrat Adam Schiff in the most expensive race
for a House seat up to that time (a record since eclipsed in many contests). He serves
currently on the Superior Court of California. Two items.
