GEORGE H.W. BUSH
The then-Vice President of the United States offers a young voter
some advice on how best to choose a candidate to support, signs name in blue
ink
Typed letter signed: "George Bush" in blue ink. 1 page, 7x9.
Written on official Vice Presidential letterhead. Washington, D.C. April 15,
1982. Addressed to Mr. Lee Kramer of Great Neck, New York. In full:
"One of the nicest things about being the Vice President is hearing from the
young people of our country. Your confusing in deciding which candidate is best
is not unusual. There are often several good people running for the same office.
I can only suggest that you gather as much information about each candidate as
you can, including voting records, philosophy, stands on issues, etc. decide
which party more nearly reflects your beliefs; then vote for the person whose
philosophy, character, party affiliation and leadership qualifications coincide
with your standards. It is not always an easy process, but how great that we
have the freedom to choose. Thank you for your letter and your interest.
Sincerely". George H.W. Bush, born in Milton, Massachusetts in
1924, was Ronald Reagan's Vice President (1981-1989) before
serving as 41st U.S. President (1989-1993), the first incumbent Vice
President to be elected President since 1836. Bush's distinguished resume
included oil company executive, Texas Congressman, Chairman of the Republican
Party, Director of Central Intelligence, Ambassador to China and Ambassador to
the United Nations. As President he conducted a largely successful foreign
policy, including the first Gulf War against Iraq, Operation Desert Storm, and
the 1989 invasion of Panama to depose General Manuel Noriega. But a sluggish
domestic economy, and a tax increase which broke his famous "Read my lips: No
- new - taxes" speech, doomed his bid for re-election. His son, George W.
Bush, became 43rd president in 2001 and served two terms. James McNerney,
former CEO of 3M Corporation and currently of Boeing, was named head of the
Export Council by President Obama. Normal mailing folds. Slightly toned. Light
surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
