November 28. Begins: "Dear Friends". In full: "Barbara and
I want to thank you for your congratulatory message. That was most thoughtful
and we appreciate it. We are, of course, delighted that the election is now
behind us, and we are ready to get back to the job at hand. With warm best
wishes to the entire 'Gym Crew'." Bush has handwritten a postscript:
"May your year be Free of Hinders!!" In handball, one of Bush's favorite
sports, a "hinder" is an erratic bounce. On November 6, 1984, President Reagan
and Vice President Bush won reelection in a landslide over their Democratic
opponents, Walter F. Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro, 54.5 million to 37.6 million
popular votes and 525-13 electoral votes. Mondale-Ferraro won just Minnesota and
the District of Columbia. Light blue line (probably a flaw in either his printer
or the stationery) runs horizontally across the bottom margin and Bush's
signature touches it, else in fine condition.
