GEORGE BUSH
Typed Letter signed on his personal note card to his friend Cy Laughter (1994), talking about Laughter's decision not to run for Congress
Typed Letter signed: "George", 6¼x4 card. No place, 1996 January 4. On personal note card to "Dear Cy" [Laughter], in full: "You probably made the right decision about running for Congress, though I sure would like to have seen you beat Tony Hall. Have a great New Year. Warm regards". George Herbert Walker Bush (1924-2018) was Ronald Reagan's Vice President (1981-1989) before serving as 41st U.S. President (1989-1993), the first incumbent Vice President to be elected President since 1836. Bush's distinguished resume included oil company executive, Texas Congressman, Chairman of the Republican Party, Director of Central Intelligence, Ambassador to China and Ambassador to the United Nations.  As President he conducted a largely successful foreign policy, including the first Gulf War against Iraq, Operation Desert Storm, and the 1989 invasion of Panama to depose General Manuel Noriega. But he wasn't re-elected largely due to shortcomings in his domestic policy, including a tax increase in 1990 after a campaign promise - the famous "Read my lips: No - new - taxes" speech - not to raise them. His son, George W. Bush, became 43rd president in 2001 and served two terms. Cy Laughter (pronounced Law-ter), a close friend of George Bush, ran a tool and die company in Dayton, Ohio. Laughter would have had a tough race on its hands against Tony Hall, who represented his Ohio district in Congress from 1979 until his retirement in 2002. Fine condition.
