No place, 1996 March 28. On personal letterhead to "Dear Cy" [Laughter]. In full: "Thanks for filling me in on the lawsuit.Good luck. I'm just back from the Middle East, and I leave next week for China. Life is hectic. Hastily, but with best wishes". George Herbert Walker Bush (1924-2018) was Ronald Reagan's Vice President (1981-1989) before serving as 41st U.S. President (1989-1993), the first incumbent Vice President to be elected President since 1836. Bush's distinguished resume included oil company executive, Texas Congressman, Chairman of the Republican Party, Director of Central Intelligence, Ambassador to China and Ambassador to the United Nations. As President he conducted a largely successful foreign policy, including the first Gulf War against Iraq, Operation Desert Storm, and the 1989 invasion of Panama to depose General Manuel Noriega. But he wasn't re-elected largely due to shortcomings in his domestic policy, including a tax increase in 1990 after a campaign promise - the famous "Read my lips: No - new - taxes" speech - not to raise them. His son, George W. Bush, became 43rd president in 2001 and served two terms. Cy Laughter (pronounced Law-ter), a close friend of George Bush, ran a tool and die company in Dayton, Ohio.
