Austin, Texas, 1995 May 5. Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 128. After 10 paragraphs citing the need for improved math and science education in the State, the document resolves: "That the 14th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby commend the Math and Science Hotline for providing an efficient and effective vehicle for facilitating university-school collaborations." GEORGE WALKER BUSH (b. 1946), the 43rd US President (2001-2009) and the son of the 41st, was elected to the first of two consecutive terms as Governor of Texas in 1994. Although his prior resume, which included co-ownership of the Texas Rangers baseball franchise, was thin in comparison to his father's, Bush had good success as a Republican Governor working with a state legislature controlled by the Democrats throughout his tenure. Bush touted this record of bipartisan cooperation during his Presidential campaign in 2000. Bipartisanship on the national level proved elusive, however, except for a brief interval following the terrorist attacks of 9/11/01. This resolution anticipates another feature of the Bush Presidency, emphasis on the quality of education (embodied in his "no child left behind" agenda). Of course, Bush's critics would note - and his admirers boast - that this Concurrent Resolution was an easy vote for legislators of both parties because it spent no government money and created no new regulations. It simply praised a school initiative already in progress. GONSALVO ARRIENTOS (b. 1941) who served represented an Austin district in the Texas legislature, was President Pro Tem of the Senate during Bush's tenure as Governor. West Texan PETER LANEY (b. 1943) was Speaker of the Texas House from 1993 to 2003. Bush praised Laney's bipartisanship during the 2000 Presidential campaign. Fine condition.
