GEORGE W. BUSH Plate from the Presidential retreat Camp David that belonged to Neil Bush's former wife Ephemera, unsigned. Pewter plate, 10½-inch diameter, embossed with the title "Presidential Retreat" on rim. Also embossed in bowl with the sign and logo, "Camp David." Made by Wilton Company of Mount Joy, Pennsylvania. The Presidential retreat in Catoctin Mountain Park, Maryland, was originally named Shangri-La by President Franklin Roosevelt when opened in 1942. FDR hosted the site's first visiting world leader, Winston Churchill, in 1943. President Eisenhower renamed the site Camp David, after his grandson, David Eisenhower. Camp David's many important guests have included Nikita Khrushchev and Margaret Thatcher, and President Carter mediated the Camp David Accords between Israeli Prime Minister Begin and Egyptian President Sadat there in 1978. President Nixon extensively remodeled the facilities, which have witnessed President Ford on a snowmobile and President Reagan on a horse. President George W. Bush has visited the site frequently, drafting important speeches and meeting there with key advisors. Invitations to Camp David are highly prized, often used to reward Presidential friends and allies. This plate was owned by Sharon Bush, for twenty years the spouse of Presidential brother Neil Bush. After the couple's acrimonious divorce in 2003, Sharon Bush sold some personal mementos from happier times, including this one. George W. Bush (b. 1946) is the only U.S. President to be reelected after succeeding a two-term President of the opposing political party. Most recently, he paired up with fellow former Commander-in-Chief Bill Clinton to conduct an in-depth interview with Time magazine and regarding their plans for the coming year and their take on the 2016 election. This issue of Time with Clinton and himself on the cover will be the 31st cover he has been on since June 21, 1999. Fine condition.
