BUSH, RUDY GIULIANI, HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON, GEORGE PATAKI and MICHAEL BLOOMBERGThis white hard hat, used during the clean-up of Ground Zero at New York's destroyed Twin Towers, was signed by President George W. Bush, New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, New York Governor George Pataki, United States Senator from New York Hillary Rodham Clinton and Michael Bloomberg, who succeeded Giuliani as mayor. Except for Bloomberg, all the signers on this helmet were in office during the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. On the ill-fated day of September 11, 2001, four commercial airliners were hijacked by 19 terrorists recruited and trained by Osama bin Laden's al-qaeda network. While one captured aircraft hit the Pentagon and another, diverted by heroic passengers, crashed in a Pennsylvania field, one each, Boeing 757 & 767 that had taken off from Boston hit the twin towers of New York's World Trade Center. Nearly 3,000 people died at and around the WTC, including over 400 emergency responders. The 30,000 people who toiled on the cleanup, which continued until May 30, 2002, suffered great risks as well. A federal screening one year after the tragedy found that 52% were suffering ear, nose and throat ailments, 46% had pulmonary disorders and 52% experienced mental problems, including post-traumatic stress disorders. The enormous global consequences of 9/11 are well known. Except for MICHAEL BLOOMBERG, who was elected Mayor of New York shortly after the tragedy and became much involved in New York City's recovery, all the signers were in office on that fateful day:GEORGE W. BUSH, who first visited the site on September 14, 2001, was President of the United States, RUDOLPH GIULIANI was Mayor of New York City, GEORGE PATAKI was Governor of New York and former First Lady HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON was U.S. Senator from the state.
