GEORGE WASHINGTON
This black and white engraving depicts the United States President on his deathbed
Engraving Unsigned. B/w, 9½x6¾ overall, image 7x4¾ (one surface). Captioned: "THE DEATH OF WASHINGTON". By Wagerian, Virtue & Co. Publishers, N.Y. George Washington (1732-1799), who became known as the "Father of His Country", set precedents for future Presidents by limiting his service as first U.S. President to two terms. A delegate to the Continental Congress from Virginia (1774-1775) and member of the U.S. Constitutional Convention (1787), Washington was also known for his contributions to American freedom with his leadership of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. Washington, who was exposed to a severe winter storm on December 13, 1799, died the following evening between 10:00 and 11:00 p.m. Although his relatives had been sent for, they did not arrive in time to hear his last words, "'Tis well." The only ones present at his side in an upper bedchamber at the time of his death were his wife, Martha Custis Washington, the family's personal physician, Dr. Craik, two additional physicians, Tobias Lear, Washington's secretary, and two colored servants, Christopher and a nurse. Mounting tape on verso (no show through). ¼" vertical tear at upper right margin. Slightly spotted. Otherwise, fine condition.
