This black and white engraving depicts the United States President on his deathbed
Engraving Unsigned. B/w, 9½x6¾ overall, image 7x4¾ (one surface). Captioned: "THE
DEATH OF WASHINGTON". By Wagerian, Virtue & Co. Publishers, N.Y. George
Washington (1732-1799), who became known as the "Father of His Country", set
precedents for future Presidents by limiting his service as first U.S. President to two terms. A
delegate to the Continental Congress from Virginia (1774-1775) and member of the U.S.
Constitutional Convention (1787), Washington was also known for his contributions to
American freedom with his leadership of the Continental Army during the American
Revolution. Washington, who was exposed to a severe winter storm on December 13, 1799,
died the following evening between 10:00 and 11:00 p.m. Although his relatives had been sent
for, they did not arrive in time to hear his last words, "'Tis well." The only ones present at his
side in an upper bedchamber at the time of his death were his wife, Martha Custis
Washington, the family's personal physician, Dr. Craik, two additional physicians, Tobias
Lear, Washington's secretary, and two colored servants, Christopher and a nurse. Mounting
tape on verso (no show through). ¼" vertical tear at upper right margin. Slightly spotted.
