Sale Price $1,275.00
The former President thanks his "all time favorite writer," sportswriter Jim Murray, for an inscribed copy of the writer's autobiography.
Autograph Letter signed: "Jerry Ford", 1p, 6¼x8½. No place, March 18 (no year, but circa 1993). On his personal stationery with Presidential seal to "Dear Jim". In full: "George Grazindio gave me the copy of your autobiography which you so generously inscribed. I thank you for your thoughtful comments which I treasure. You are my all time favorite writer 'across the board.' I thank you for your many kindnesses, especially your friendship. Warmest regards". Ink note on verso (unknown hand) on verso: "1993". On August 9, 1974, GERALD R. FORD (1913-2006) was sworn in as the nation's 38th President (1974-1977) following the resignation of Richard Nixon. Ford had previously served as Nixon's Vice President (1973-1974) following the resignation of Vice President Spiro Agnew, becoming the only man to have held both of the nation's highest offices without being elected to either. Ford, who was previously a U.S. Congressman from Michigan (1949-1973; Minority Leader, 1965-1973), lost his bid for a full term to Democrat Jimmy Carter in 1976. Ford, an All-American football star at Michigan and an avid golfer in retirement, was a natural audience for sportswriter JIM MURRAY (1919-1998), the addressee. Longtime sports columnist for the Los Angeles Times (1961-1998), Sports Illustrated, Time and many other publications, was named America's Best Sportswriter fourteen times by his professional association. Murray, who won an Emmy in 1967 and a Pulitzer Prize in 1990, published his autobiography, one of six books he wrote, in 1992. As this letter makes clear, Ford loved Murray's writing and appreciated receiving an inscribed copy of the autobiography. Ink note on verso shows through faintly in upper left corner. Fine condition.
