GERALD R. FORD
Gerald R. Ford signs a black and white photograph advertising a special on HBO.
Photograph signed: "Gerald R. Ford". B/w, 8x10. Montage of three different photographs; upper photograph is 7¼x5, two lower photographs are 3½x3¼. Ford has signed on his photograph at lower right. Captioned: "HALL OF SHAME: HBO Sports takes a lighthearted look at some of THE NOT-SO-GREAT MOMENTS IN SPORTS in an hour-long special debuting SUNDAY, MAY 5 (10:00-11:00 P.M. ET), on HBO. Featured on the program are (clockwise from top), Ty Cobb overcoming obstacles to slide into third base; Gerald Ford realizing his wayward golf ball hit an innocent bystander, and baseball's Billy Martin proving his philosophy that silence isn't always golden." Although the press had a field day with Ford's mishaps, including his golf ball hitting a spectator, the 38th U.S. President (1974-1977) was a former All-American and one of the most athletic of the U.S. Presidents. Ford, who was center on the University of Michigan national championship football team (1932-1933), received offers from two football teams, the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers. After graduating from Michigan in 1935, however, Ford became a boxing coach and assistant varsity football coach at Yale (1935-1940). He had taken up golf as a youngster, and his handicap was 12 several times in his life (at the age of 80, he carried a 15-17 handicap). Ford also played tennis and enjoyed skiing. Minor surface creases (not evident head on). Fine condition.
