GERALD R. FORD

Photograph signed: "Gerald R. Ford". B/w, 8x9¾ overall, image
7¼x7¼ (one surface). Gerald R. Ford (1913-2006), who had been a U.S.
Congressman from Michigan from 1949-1973, had high hopes for the nation when
he became the 38th President of the U.S. (1974-1977) after the
resignation of Richard M. Nixon. His 29-month administration, however, was
plagued by a severe economic recession and crises both at home and abroad.
Record high consumer prices and the highest unemployment figures since the 1930s
did little to help his popularity, already damaged by his pardon of
Nixon, and the fall of South Vietnam to the Communists damaged American
prestige abroad. Ford, who had little support from the Congress, vetoed 66
bills; in turn, Congress overrode his vetoes 12 times, the most since the
administration of Andrew Jackson. Ford holds the record as the longest-lived
former U.S. President. Fine condition.
