GERALD FORD (1913-2006), 38th U.S. President, and First Lady BETTY FORD (1918-2011) lived at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue from 1974-1979. First Lady ROSALYN CARTER, the wife of 39th President Jimmy Carter (1977-1981), followed the Betty Ford as First Lady. CLAUDIA TAYLOR "LADY BIRD" JOHNSON, the wife of 36th President Lyndon B. Johnson, lived in the White House from 1963-1969. She followed JACQUELINE BOUVIER KENNEDY (1929-1994), the wife of 35th President John F. Kennedy, who was First Lady from 1961-1963. While she lived in the White House, Mrs. Kennedy was involved in a beautification project that transformed the Executive Mansion into a museum of American history and decorative arts. ELIZABETH WALLACE "BESS" TRUMAN (1885-1982), the wife of 33rd President Harry S Truman, was First Lady from 1945-1953. Mrs. Truman, who hated the lack of privacy in the White House, lived in Blair House for most of her husband's second term as the Executive Mansion, found to be in need of extensive repairs, was being rebuilt.
