GERALD R. FORD and ROBERT J. DOLE
The 1976 Republican ticket sign an engraving of the White House, Dole ran for President 20 years later.
Engraving signed: "Gerald R. Ford" and "Bob Dole". B/w, 8x6 overall, oval image 4¼x1½ (one surface). At the Republican National Convention held at the Kemper Sports Arena in Kansas City, August 16-19, 1976, President Ford was nominated for President on the first ballot, narrowly defeating former California Governor Ronald Reagan, 1,187 to 1,070 delegate votes; 1,130 were needed for nomination. He chose Kansas Senator Robert J. Dole as his running mate. Dole, a U.S. Senator since 1974, was Republican National Chairman from 1971-1973. In the November 2, 1976 election, Democrats Jimmy Carter and Walter F. Mondale defeated Ford-Dole by 40.8 million to 39.1 million popular votes and 297-240 electoral votes. Ford-Dole won more states, 27-23 and Washington, D.C., the only time in U.S. history that a candidate with more states lost the election. Ford retired from politics, moved to a new home in California and wrote his memoirs, A Time to Heal (1979). Dole returned to the Senate where he served as Minority (1987-1994) and Majority Leader (1985-1986, 1995-1996). He ran for President in 1996, resigning from the Senate to fully devote his time to the campaign. Dole lost the November 5, 1996 election to President Clinton by 47.4 million to 39.2 million popular votes, 379-159 electoral votes and 31 states and Washington, D.C. to 19 states. Fine condition.
