GERALD FORD
The first 11x14 color official portrait taken of the 38th U. S. President.
Photograph mount inscribed and signed: "To David Coxon, with best wishes,/Gerald R. Ford". Color, 11x14 overall, image 7¼x9¼ (two surfaces). This was the first official portrait taken of 38th U.S. President Gerald R. Ford. A former All-American football player at the University of Michigan and a navy veteran of World War II, Gerald R. Ford (1913-2006) represented Michigan in the U.S. Congress (1949-1973), serving as Minority Leader (1965-1973). Following the resignation of Vice President Spiro Agnew, Ford became in 1973 the first person nominated by the President and confirmed by vote of both Houses of Congress as Vice President under the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Following President Nixon's resignation the following year, Ford became 38th President of the United States on August 9, 1974. Nominated by the Republican Party for a full term in 1976, Ford was narrowly defeated by Democrat Jimmy Carter. Before his death on December 26, 2006, Ford surpassed Ronald Reagan (who also lived to age 93) to become the longest-lived former U.S. President. Slight wear to upper edge and corners. Lightly soiled on mounting board. Otherwise, fine condition.
